Samarkand (Sogdian for stony city) is the capital of the province with the same name in Uzbekistan. At 720 meters above sea level, it is located on a high plateau which belongs to the westernmost foothills of the Alai Mountains. The region around the city is part of the river oasis of the Serafschan River which flows around the city’s northern part. Southeast, roughly 20 km away, start the foothills of the Alai Mountain range which forms the natural border with Tadzhikistan and Dushanbe.
